The astonishing display of hypocrisy by Green Party TD and Deputy Leader Mary White on the medical card crisis has been described as breathtaking by her constituency colleague Cllr. Seán Ó hArgáin, Kilkenny Labour Party Borough Councillor. He said Mary White's sudden conversion to the injustice caused by the removal of medical cards for the over 70's was in total contrast to her defence of the measure on local radio on Wednesday morning, and challenged her to state when her Damascus conversion on the issue took place. "Anybody who heard Mary White's defence of the budget and the cutting of medical cards from the elderly on local radio on Wednesday will wonder if it is the same person who is so publicly condemning the measure on national radio and television this evening. When challenged by myself and a series of other contributors on the matter she continuously defended the move as 'a difficult but necessary measure in these times of economic difficulty'. Now like St. Paul on the road to Damascus and I suspect having been deluged by the same irate and upset elderly people and their families who have been contacting all of us in recent days she suddenly has seen the impact of this mean-spirited and nasty snatch-back measure. It shows just how removed from the reality of ordinary people's lives the Greens and Fianna Fail have become. At least Wicklow TD Joe Behan has had the courage of his convictions and left this miserable Government. If Mary White has any gumption she will follow suit and if her party has any bottle left it will seek the renegotiation of the entire package of health and education cuts in the budget. If they don't the Irish people will revolt and rightly so.
