Tom Shortt is an Art and Design teacher and a senior member of staff at Scoil Carmel girls secondary school O'Connell Ave. Over the years he worked on the election campaigns of Jim Kemmy T.D., Cllr. John Ryan and Jan O'Sullivan T.D.
He was one of a group of parents who founded the Limerick School Project a multi-denominational primary school now located in its permanent premises on O'Connell Ave. Tom served terms as chairman of the Board of Management and as chairman of the Limited Company which acted as the patron of the school. Tom is proud of the role he played in creating this option in primary education in Limerick where parents, children and teachers of different faiths, cultures and social backgrounds are integrated under one roof in a democratically structured school with a high level of parental involvement.
In 2004 in response to the lack of recreational facilities for teenagers in Limerick, Tom formed the Limerick Skatepark Action Group with members of the young skateboarding community in the city. As chairman he led the campaign which resulted in the opening in July 2008 of a well designed City Council skatepark at Mounth Kenneth.
He researched and submitted a proposal to Limerick Regeneration concerning the development of indoor recreational facilities for young people on the Northside of the city. In Oct. 2008 he co-ordinated the formation of Limerick Skate Club and he is also working as public relations officer of Limerick Kickboxing Academy calling for the full involvement of all codes of boxing and martial arts clubs in Regeneration plans.
Tom is active in his community and is committed to supporting the existing and emerging sports and recreational facilities which provide young people with structure and goals in their lives as alternatives to apathy aimlessness and depression. He believes that policing and law enforcement should be focused to give people especially old people a greater sense of safety and peace of mind on the streets and in their own homes free of intimidation and vandalism.
He is committed to a process of genuine consultation with all communities located either inside or outside Regeneration on issues of planning where housing, roads, public transport, parks and green areas are concerned in order to work for a decent quality of life across the Northside of Limerick.
With a background in the Arts and Education he is actively concerned about the preservation of the architectural and natural heritage of the city, increased participation in the arts and culture and the promotion and protection of access to learning and education.
Yes, Tom is a brother of comedian Pat Shortt and is examining the family tree to figure out his relationship to colourful Councillors Maurice Hickey and Willie Power.
