Labour Councillors visit the European institutions in Brussels - The Labour Party
A delegation of 18 councillors, geographically spread from around the country and 2 staff flew to Brussels on the 8th of April. Brussels was named the home of the European Parliament after an agreement of the founding members, The European Parliament, which sits in Brussels 3 out of 4 weeks a month, the 4th in Strasbourg, France.
While in Brussels the delegation received a tour of the Parliament, viewed the parliament chamber from the viewing gallery and Aodhan O Riordain, MEP, and his staff held a meeting with councillors in the PES meeting to discuss how their work in their communities connects with the European Union, and how we can work on building that connection further now that we are again represented in the second largest grouping in the EP. We were also given a tour of the House of European History, detailing the history of Europe from before the establishment of the European Coal and Steel community (ECSC) after WW2, to the creation of the European Parliament with appointed MEPS up to the present day of the European Union with elected MEPS.
A very sincere thank you to Aodhan, and to Sam and Ciara in his office, for organising such and engaging trip for the councillors. We hope to build on this successful trip with further delegations to Brussels over the next four years.
