No emergency legislation for RPZs listed for next week - The Labour Party

  • Was Tánaiste misleading the Dáil?

Labour housing spokesperson Conor Sheehan TD has called on the Government to come clean with renters on its plans.

With no emergency legislation on RPZs listed for Dáil business next week, Deputy Sheehan said Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil are making it up as they go along.

Deputy Sheehan said:

“Just yesterday on the floor of the Dáil the Tánaiste promised emergency legislation to make the entire country an RPZ – a decision which was only taken when Government realised that the consequences of their actions could have a dire impact on an already overheated rental market.

“The Business Committee, which sets the agenda of the Dáil, has just been published with no reference made to this emergency legislation for next week, nor is it listed for indicative business the following week (23rd June).

“It’s crazy that in an effort to calm the horses the Tánaiste was clearly making it up as he went along to avoid the ire of the Opposition. Well, I have news for him and for the Housing Minister, their disastrous treatment of renters will not be forgotten for a very long time.

“When will this emergency legislation be published and put to the floor of the house? We need to see the details proposed. It’s clear that anything put forward by this Government will need to be examined with a fine tooth comb given the adhoc nature proposals seem to be put together.

“Creating housing policy on the back of an envelope will not fly. It won’t address the concerns of renters, it won’t bring down the costs and it certainly won’t increase the supply of housing.

“I am calling on the Housing Minister to tell the public today: when will the emergency legislation be published and tabled in the Dáil, and can he confirm that the new housing plan will come before the Dáil before the summer recess.

“How could Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil be failing so badly on housing when they’ve so long to tackle the myriad of systemic issues in Ireland’s housing system?”
