Throughout this series, we deep dive into historical moments that illustrate the power and importance of solidarity in overcoming differences and division to achieve real change for working people.
To kick things off, we turn the pages of history and revisit the inspiring story of the Workers’ Union of Ireland.
Over the coming episodes, we’ll shed light on the experiences of women workers with Dr Theresa Moriarity, delve into the life and legacy of Young Jim Larkin with Dr Emmet O’Connor and hear from RMT General Secretary Mick Lynch.
We begin this episode with a tribute to Jim Larkin by the great Irish poet Patrick Kavanagh, setting the stage for the many battles to come.
Then, we hear a compelling lecture by Padraig Yeates on the foundation of the Workers’ Union itself. Padraig is introduced by Irish Labour History Society President, Shay Cody.
This is followed by a firsthand account from Bill Attley, a central figure of the historic merger that brought together the WUI and the Irish Transport and General Workers Union to form SIPTU in 1990. Bill is introduced by SIPTU General Secretary, Joe Cunningham.
