PENROSE EXPRESSES SUPPORT FOR CAMERON WORKERS IN LONGFORD

05 October 2016

Labour TD for Longford- Westmeath, Willie Penrose, has expressed solidarity with workers at the Cameron factory in Longford, after the company warned it may cease manufacturing at its Aghadad plant next year, with the potential loss of around 170 jobs.

Cameron, which designs and manufactures technologies for the global oil and gas sector, blamed a severe downturn in the industry for the proposals.

Commenting on the reports today, Deputy Penrose said the company must use every means at its disposal to try and minimise any potential job losses at the factory.

“This is a major blow to workers and their families, many of whom have done long service to the company, and a blow to the Longford region in general.

Every effort must be made to ensure that any job losses are minimised, and that those whose jobs are under threat are given the help they need to find new employment as soon as possible.

This is also a sharp reminder of the need to maintain our local competitiveness in the face of global uncertainty.”
