BACIK WELCOMES PROPOSED OXFAM GOAL MERGER
Labour Spokesperson on Foreign Affairs and Development, Senator Ivana Bacik, has welcomed news of a possible merger between Oxfam Ireland and GOAL.
It’s been announced that the two charities have entered formal talks on an agreement which would see them come together as one organisation ‘Oxfam GOAL’, after securing board approval to explore the proposals.
Commenting on the announcement, Senator Bacik said:
“I welcome the news that we’re now a step closer to a merger between these two charities, which carry out such vital humanitarian and development work overseas.
“There have long been calls for consolidation in Ireland’s aid sector, and if this planned merger is successful, I believe it will lead to one strong Irish NGO doing important work in the developing world and assisting those in humanitarian need.
“Both Oxfam and GOAL already have a strong individual presence in many countries around the world, and bringing these two organisations together can only build on this.
“It is vital that Ireland continues to play its part on the world stage, and I’m confident that consolidation at home will be of tremendous boost to this vibrant sector.”
