STATEMENT ON THE DEATH OF PETER MATHEWS
I was very sorry to hear of the death of Peter Mathews.
He and I were both elected to Dail Eireann exactly six years ago, in that extraordinary general election at the height of the economic crisis.
Peter was absolutely resolute in his views, and in his critique of the policy response to the banking collapse. He expressed these views without fear or favour, and with a striking independence of thought and spirit. He was honest, forthright and respectful in his dealings with colleagues.
Peter and I disagreed on some issues, but we were strong constituency colleagues. I valued his insights. He will be sadly missed by a most loyal and loving family. I extend my deepest sympathy to them, and especially to Susan.
