Penrose welcomes Town and Village funding for Westmeath and Longford
Labour spokesperson on Rural Affairs, and Longford-Westmeath TD, Willie Penrose has welcomed the announcement of nearly €600,000 for projects in Westmeath under the Town and Village Renewal Scheme, and a further €637,000 for Longford, but has said this must be sustained in future years.
Deputy Penrose said:
“I welcome the allocation of nearly €600,000 from the Town and Village Renewal Scheme for projects in Westmeath and a further €637,00 for Longford but this must now be followed up with further action to restore and renew our small towns and villages.
“For example this will provide €40,000 to enhance the canal harbour and two public spaces in Ballinacargy, and €68,000 for signage and laneway improvements in Devlin. These are all essential projects that deserve the recognition of central Government.
“While all funds are welcome, out of €21.6 million I would have preferred if more came to Westmeath and Longford, and I will be raising this with Minister for Rural and Community Development Michael Ring to ensure our counties get their fair share of Government support.
“I also hope this won’t be a once off scheme, but will be part of a sustained, multi-year approach to investing in our small towns and villages.
“The Government must continue to ensure they follow up on the commitments they have made in the Action Plan for Rural Development.”
