Luas issues a concern ahead of St. Patrick’s Day weekend
Responding to reports of continued delays and severe overcrowding on the Luas line, Labour Transport spokesperson Senator Kevin Humphreys has backed calls for Luas operator Transdev to appear before the Oireachtas Transport Committee.
Senator Humphreys said:
“We are now three months in since the launch of the Luas Cross City line and problems that have plagued the new service since December are continuing.
“Further reports this morning of people being crammed into carriages or not able to get on and facing significant delays due to signal or technical faults are not good enough.
“It’s become apparent that these are more than just teething issues from the launch of the new Luas service, and the problems are adding to traffic congestion in the city centre.
“I understand that an invitation will be extended to Luas operators Transdev to come before the Oireachtas Transport Committee, which I hope will be taken up.
“We need to know what action is being taken to rectify the issues as passengers are becoming increasingly frustrated.
“The St. Patrick’s Day weekend is now approaching, and we hope that big crowds will come into the city for the parade.
“We don’t want problems with public transport ruining peoples’ enjoyment of the celebrations on what is also an important day for business in the City Centre.
“If we want to have Dublin on the map as an international city to do business in we need to ensure we get the basics right, and these consistent problems with the Luas need to be sorted.”
