Women’s health at the heart of repeal campaign

With just two weeks to go to the referendum on repealing the eighth amendment, Labour TD Jan O’Sullivan, has said it is important that voters keep women’s health at the forefront of their minds.

Deputy O’Sullivan said:

“This day two weeks people right across the country will be heading to their local polling stations to have their say on the eighth amendment of the Constitution, some for the very first time.

“Over the past two weeks, Ireland has been shaken to its core by the cervical cancer scandal, with women everywhere feeling let down by our health system.

“The distress and anxiety that these revelations have caused to the women involved can never be measured and there are no words to describe how they and their families must be feeling.

“Women right across Ireland deserve so much better than what our health service has delivered to date, and this should be borne in mind when voters head to the ballot boxes in two weeks’ time.

“We now have a once in a generation opportunity to have our say on the eighth amendment, and take women’s healthcare out of the constitution where it should never have been put in the first place.

“By voting Yes on May 25th, we can ensure that women receive the proper healthcare they need at what can be for many, a very vulnerable time in their lives.

“By voting Yes on May 25th, we can tell the women of Ireland that they deserve to be shown compassion in a crisis.

“By voting Yes on May 25th we can stop forcing women to travel abroad, away from the care of their doctors, or to use medication ordered online, alone and afraid in their bathrooms.

“It’s time for Ireland to do the right thing for women’s health and vote to repeal the eight amendment on May 25th.”
