Welcome the review of sex offence trials
Labour Senator Ivana Bacik has welcomed the publication of the Gillen Review into the trial of serious sexual offences in Northern Ireland.
Speaking today Senator Bacik said:
“It is very positive to see a series of considered recommendations emerging from the Gillen Review as to reforms to the trial process for serious sexual offences in Northern Ireland, and I welcome the ongoing process of bringing about necessary reforms in that jurisdiction.
“The establishment of that Review was carried out as a response to genuine concerns about the conduct of trials for rape and other serious sexual offences.
“I also welcome the review of sex offence trials which is taking place in this jurisdiction under chairperson Tom O’Malley, and which is due to report in December 2018. I look forward to engaging with that review process along with Labour colleagues, particularly Deputy Sean Sherlock. In particular, we will seek to ensure greater support for complainants during the trial and at pre- and post-trial stages.”
