Labour unveils Alternative Budget transport plans

The Labour Party would cut public transport fares by ten per cent, cap Leap fares outside Dublin, and expand the City Bike scheme.

These are just some of the measures unveiled in the party’s Alternative Budget 2020, today.

Labour Transport spokesperson, Senator Kevin Humphreys said:

“If we want an efficient, reliable public transport system for all our citizens, and to reduce our reliance on fossil fuels by getting cars off the roads, we need to invest more.

“That also means making public transport more accessible for all.

“In our Alternative Budget 2020, Labour has committed to cutting public transport fares by 10%, as well as capping Leap fares in Cork, Galway, Waterford and Limerick, and make Mallow a commuter station.

“We would also increase PSO subsidies for public and rural transport to keep Ireland moving.

“The introduction of the city bike scheme has been an incredibly positive development across Ireland, and one that Labour is proud to have championed.

“But it’s time the scheme was expanded to the outer suburbs and to roll it out to other towns around Ireland, so Labour has committed a further 30.5 million to this as well as a subvention of 20c cent per journey.

“It’s time to end the years of neglect in public transport under the current Government.”
