Traffic chaos: Let children go free on Dublin transport in December

Labour Transport spokesperson, Senator Kevin Humphreys, has called for free fares for children to be instated on public transport in Dublin in December in a bid to encourage more people to leave their cars at home in the run up to Christmas.

Senator Humphreys said:

“Anyone travelling in and out of Dublin City Centre at the moment can attest to the dreadful traffic congestion on the roads, particularly at peak hour.

“This will only get significantly worse next month as people get stuck into their Christmas shopping.

“One way of encouraging parents to leave the car at home would be to instate free fares for children on public transport in Dublin for the month of December.

“This would also help to boost footfall in the city centre, which would of course also benefit local businesses who are competing with online shopping.

“Last summer, the Leap Cards Kids go Free promotion saw nearly two million trips taken on the Luas in July alone.

“If we add busses and trains to the mix it could make a massive difference in reducing the number of private cars on our roads at one of the busiest times of the year.”
