Record tax take but Government is failing to solve problems

03 January 2020

Responding to the end of year Exchequer returns, Labour Finance spokesperson Joan Burton said:

“The government has taken in a record amount of tax in 2019.

“It’s hard to contemplate this as the same government has failed to manage investment in housing, health and public transport in any competent way.

“Notwithstanding a major announcement practically everyday, these announcements are making people despair that this government cannot do the  business that people long to see namely to build enough homes, end the trolley crisis and install electric trains and trams that allow people to switch to public transport, reduce carbon consumption and clean up our air and water.

“It’s sad that as our young population continues to grows, more and more children and their parents are under stress as to whether they can get a local primary or secondary school place as the scroll build programs fall behind.

“Instead we have a government so dedicated to spin that they have lost touch with the acute disappointment that accompanies their failure to deliver.”
