Media should respect privacy and public health in Coronavirus coverage

02 March 2020

Labour education spokesperson Aodhán Ó Ríordáin TD today (Monday) called on the media and others to respect the privacy of the person who has tested positive for the Covid19 Coronavirus. He said it was important that the individual and their family were fully supported by the health and education authorities, and that the school community receives all the necessary supports.

Deputy Ó Ríordáin said: “It’s disappointing that a number of media titles have named the school concerned this morning, in spite of the HSE’s efforts to protect the privacy of those concerned, and to encourage others who may have come into contact with the virus to seek help and advice.

“Aside from the obvious health concerns, this development will be a huge worry to students preparing for Leaving Cert and Junior Cert exams, and for their families, their teachers and other school staff. Every necessary support should be put in place to help the school community through this difficult time,” he said.
