Statement by Alan Kelly on Ruth Morrissey appeal
Commenting on the Supreme Court verdict of the Ruth Morrissey appeal, Labour Party Health spokesperson, Alan Kelly TD, said:
“I want to wish Ruth and her family well. This decision by the Supreme Court will hopefully close the chapter on a very troubling time for Ruth and all in her family.
“The way the State initially handled this case was extremely cack-handed and one the State must learn lessons from.
“The Taoiseach promised that women impacted by this scandal would be treated with dignity and through non-confrontational mediation. What Ruth has gone through in the High Court and this appeal is the opposite of that.
“The fact that a verdict has been reached in this appeal, means the long-awaited tribunal process can be established once we deal with Covid-19.
“We cannot have sick women bringing cases through the Courts if they don’t want to and a tribunal will give women and their families the space to seek other less adversarial avenues to get justice.
“I am proud to have stood with Ruth Morrissey in the Supreme Court with Vicky Phelan and to have raised her case in the Dáil many times and I will continue to fight on their behalf until all aspects of the Scally Report are implemented.”
