Gun crime out of control on northside – Taskforce needed
Where is the Taskforce FG promised over 100 days ago?
Following another shooting today, this time in Coolock, Labour TD Aodhán Ó Ríordáin said that gun crime was out of control and that additional garda resources and a designated task force, as was promised, is now needed on the northside of the city.
Deputy Ó Ríordáin said:
“Today there was a shooting in Coolock with the victim shot several times in the middle of the afternoon. Just 5 days ago there was another shooting in Darndale.
“At the end of January, in the middle of the General Election we also had a series of shootings, that culminated in commitments being made about setting up a Mulvey style taskforce for the northside of the city.
“Where is the Northside Taskforce that the Taoiseach and the Minister for Justice committed to over 100 days ago?
“Children in pockets of my constituency are growing up thinking that this kind of criminality is normal when it is absolutely not.
“We need to see a real response now to this in the form of a Northside crime task force, similar to the Mulvey Commission for the North Inner City. We also now need additional Garda resources deployed urgently as a deterrent.
“Communities across our constituency are calling out for progress. Now in their caretaker capacity, this Government must start bringing community stakeholders together in Dublin Bay North with a view to setting up a Northside task force to tackle crime.
“What is happening is not normal, we need to see real action from Government immediately.”
