Bacik calls for protection of women’s reproductive health in Northern Ireland
Labour Party Senator Ivana Bacik has expressed her concern that current political developments could restrict abortion access for women in Northern Ireland.
Senator Bacik has said:
“I echo concerns voiced today by pro-choice campaigners in Northern Ireland about any step backwards in the fight for reproductive justice and gender equality on the island of Ireland.
“Last week, we reflected on the success of the campaign to repeal the Eighth Amendment in May 2018, which was an exemplar of individuals and political parties coming together to stand up for women’s reproductive health rights.
“The Citizens’ Assembly and subsequent referendum campaign triggered a national conversation about the adverse effects of prohibiting abortion. We have already heard the testimonies of those whose lives were touched by tragedy because of draconian laws to limit abortion access.
“Next year, the Oireachtas is due to review the Health (Regulation of Termination of Pregnancy) Act 2018, which allows for the provision of abortion services in Ireland. Campaigners and constituents must have assurances that political choices by parties in this jurisdiction will be made to trust women and to improve upon women’s access to abortion services.
“Equality North and South of the border means securing the highest quality of human rights protections for women in both jurisdictions.”
