Statement on death of Colm Ó Briain former General Secretary of the Labour Party
Labour Party Leader Alan Kelly has expressed his sadness on the death of former General Secretary of the Labour Party Colm Ó Briain who had a distinguished career in the arts, media and politics.
Deputy Kelly said:
“We are saddened to learn of the death of our comrade Colm Ó Briain. On behalf of the Labour Party I want to extend my deepest sympathies to Muireann, their daughters, extended family and friends on Colm’s passing. He left an immense legacy in the arts.
“Colm remained an active member of the Labour Party over many decades, and will be greatly missed. He had a truly distinguished and varied career and was highly respected, moving from Director of the Arts Council to running the Labour Party, and later on becoming Director of the National College of Art and Design.
“During a tumultuous time in Irish politics, Colm served as General Secretary of the Labour Party from 1983 to 1985, undertook organisational reforms and brought forward the appointment of our first youth officer. He went on to serve as a special adviser for our first Minister for Arts, Michael D Higgins. The impact of his transformational work there will continue for future generations. He remained an active member of the Labour Party throughout.
