Government adopts Labour proposal of a traffic light system for Covid-19

12 August 2020

The Labour Party Representative on the Oireachtas Covid-19 Committee Duncan Smith T.D has welcomed the Government’s decision to take on board the Labour proposal of a traffic light system for Covid-19.

Deputy Smith said:

“I put it to the Minister in the Dáil in early July that we would need a traffic light system where if flu or Covid levels reached a particular level in our acute hospitals, that the public would know what stage we were at and what restrictions would accompany that particular stage. This traffic light system needs to be backed up by a strong public awareness campaign and a robust system of enforcement.

“However, it will take more than a colour coded traffic light system to get us through the next couple of months. The Government also need to act in relation to introducing a robust testing and tracing system and a stringent inspection regime for congregated workplaces and Direct Provision, so we do not end up with the same situation as occurred in food processing plants in the last week.

Deputy Smith continued:

“While I welcome the Government taking our proposal for a traffic light system on board, this needs to be backed by the immediate introduction of a suite of measures to ensure the safeguarding of workers in congregated workplaces such as food processing plants.
