Labour Party Leader, Alan Kelly TD, has extended his sympathy to the family and friends of former Labour Party Senator Jim Townsend who was a faithful stalwart of the Labour Party in County Carlow over many years.
Deputy Kelly said:
“I was saddened to learn today of the death of our long standing and loyal party member Jim Townsend who for decades was a proud servant of the Labour Party in Carlow. He was a true gentleman, never afraid to show leadership, and alway a voice of calm in difficult times.
“Jim was the definition of a Labour Party stalwart and served on Carlow County Council for 35 years, starting in 1979 right up until 2014, and for five years in the Seanad from 1993 to 1997. He contested the general election in the Carlow-Kilkenny constituency on a number of occasions, and will be fondly remembered by his colleagues across the Labour Party.
“On behalf of myself and the Labour Party I want to express my deepest sympathy and condolences to his family Caroline, Barbara, Clem and Olly, extended family and friends.
“May he rest in peace.”
