Release road maintenance grant now
Labour transport spokesperson Duncan Smith TD has urged the Minister for Transport to urgently sign off on regional and local roads maintenance grant allocation. This money is of vital importance to ensure the continued improvement of our roads, making them safer for all users.
Deputy Smith said:
“Local authorities all over the country continue to wait for this vital funding to improve the quality and safety of roads for all users. We know that since last March, more and more pedestrians and cyclists are on our roads enjoying exercising in their 5km. The Minister needs to release the funding for improvement work to ensure the quality of roads for all users across all regions.
“These funds are central to the work of local authorities, and they must be given adequate time to plan and prepare for the use of the funding. I have put a Parliamentary Question to the Minister calling on him to release these monies as soon as possible.
“With 85% of all pedestrian and cycling taking place on regional and local roads, this is a huge concern for those out walking and driving on country roads. It’s very concerning that the Minister has not released the funding to local authorities, and I’m beginning to question his commitment to the improvement of existing road infrastructure.
“Continued investment in our roads is hugely important in keeping Ireland moving and keeping them safe when doing so. I once again urge the Minister to take action and release the funding to local authorities without further delay.”
