Labour welcome scoping inquiry into historical abuse in schools
Labour justice spokesperson Aodhan Ó Ríordáin has welcomed the announcement of a scoping inquiry into allegations of historical sexual abuse in schools.
Deputy Ó Ríordáin said:
“The hundreds of people making allegations of abuse have suffered greatly in silence for many decades. It is beyond words, the pain they must feel. As a society and a State, we must do all we can make sure the adequate support is there for them and to make sure their voices are heard loud and clear.”
He added: “The courage shown by these brave people speaking out after decades of what must have been physical, mental and emotional torture and hurt can never be understated. We can only hope their bravery will encourage more people to come forward to right the horrific wrongs wreaked on them by the very people charged with their education and care.”
