We need a ceasefire now
Speaking in the Dáil today, Labour’s Duncan Smith TD reiterated calls for a ceasefire in Gaza.
Deputy Smith said:
“We have all been watching in horror at the humanitarian crisis unfolding in Gaza. Fuel, water and electricity are running out, and the health system is on the brink of collapse.
“As the death toll rises, and we see mounting evidence of war crimes by Israel, Ireland must do all we can to hold Israel accountable and to bring about a ceasefire.
“Following the outrageous attack by Hamas, many countries have been reluctant to remind Israel of its international law obligations. But it is at times when grief is so raw that adherence to the rules which ensure a humanitarian approach is so important. Calmness and compassion in the face of brutality is vital.
“We welcome and support the private member motion in the Dáil today. The EU is meant to be an entity of peace, but the statements of Ursula von der Leyen are contrary to any aspirations for real peace. The Irish Government needs to work together with EU colleagues to ensure a humanitarian response to this horrific situation.”
