Time for meaningful Luas public safety campaign

Labour Transport spokesperson Kevin Humphreys has called on all relevant stakeholders – the National Transport Authority, Dublin City Council, Transdev and the Department of Transport – to work together on a public safety awareness campaign for pedestrians and drivers along Luas routes.

Senator Humphreys said;

“Yesterday’s reports of a pedestrian death along the Luas Red Line is the second such fatal incident in the last six weeks. Another pedestrian death occurred in February of this year. There has also been an accident this morning involving a driver and a Luas in Dublin city center.

“Over the last 14 years, the Luas has become an integral part of our transport network in Dublin. It is important however that the necessary awareness of road safety around light rail is not forgotten by all road users.  

“Following two fatal incidents in such a short period of time, I think it is beholden on all the relevant stakeholders – Transdev, the Department, NTA, and Dublin City Council – to come together and contribute to a public safety awareness campaign focused on the proper use of pedestrian crossings and observation of street signs along Luas lines.

“It is time to increase public safety awareness on our roads and help keep everyone from pedestrians to drivers and passengers as safe as possible.”
