Cllr Terry O’Brien calls for support for Debenhams workers
At the meeting of Kerry County Council today, Labour Tralee Councillor Terry O’Brien successfully called on the Mayor to use his office on behalf of the elected Councillors to ensure Debenhams workers of Tralee, and nationally are treated fairly and with dignity, by writing to the Minister for Social Protection Heather Humphreys.
Cllr O’Brien said:
“At the monthly meeting of Kerry County Council I called on the Mayor to use his office to engage with the Minister for Social Protection, and the government to ensure that Debenham workers are given fair treatment, and support. What the workers are seeking is fair treatment, and they have my support. It was agreed by members to take this course of action, and I hope the new government now listens, and ensure that workers get a fair settlement.
“We have a situation where the workers have been left with nothing after the shops were closed under the cover of the Covid-19 pandemic, while liquidators try to access the millions worth of stock left in the store.
“On Friday I visited the workers on the picket line with Labour Leader Alan Kelly and committed to working to ensure they are treated with dignity and fairness. Debenham workers deserve a proper settlement.”
