Launch of Platform Workers Bill – 11.30am LH Plinth
Labour Employment spokesperson Sen. Marie Sherlock will launch her Protection of Employment (Platform Workers and Bogus Self-Employment) Bill tomorrow at 11.30am on the Leinster House plinth, and she will be joined by Labour Party Finance spokesperson Ged Nash.
The State has a responsibility to ensure that all workers, regardless of their employment status, have access to adequate rights and protections. Platform workers in the ‘gig’ economy are the essential link in the chain between the service provided and the profit made by the platform, yet they are exploited and squeezed to maximise profits for the platform. By depriving workers of fair wages, fair hours, paid leave, sick pay, heath protections, big platforms make huge profits.
Labour’s new bill seeks to address this.
