Tánaiste offers sympathies on death of Christy O’Connor

06 January 2016

I was saddened to hear of the sudden death of golf legend, Christy O’Connor Jnr.

My thoughts first and foremost are with his wife Ann, children, Nigel and Ann along with his extended family and friends.

Christy led a very active and full life; he achieved great successes as a golfer. He competed in over 20 major championships. Christy was a member of the Ryder Cup winning team in 1989 in which he secured victory for the European team with his two-iron approach. He also won back-to-back Seniors British Opens titles.

Without doubt, he will be missed by many people both in his home-town Galway and in the golfing community here and abroad.

Ar dheis dé go raibh a anam dilis.
