Galway ideal location for Global Arts Forum – Nolan

12 January 2016

Labour TD in Galway West, Derek Nolan, has welcomed a recent proposal by Tánaiste Joan Burton to host a major Global Arts Forum in Ireland, stating that Galway would be an ideal location for the event.

Deputy Nolan said, “A Global Arts Forum is a fantastic proposal. The idea is that it would be modelled on the Global Irish Economic Forum but would focus on highlighting Ireland’s impressive reputation on arts and culture.

“Such a forum would give us the opportunity to show off the talent and creativity that we have in spades in this country. In Ireland, and particularly in Galway, we have world class artists, writers, theatre companies and musicians. This should be supported as much as possible and promoted both at home and abroad.

“What better location to host such an event than Galway – the city that is known as Ireland’s cultural heart. Here in Galway we have a tremendous record in the arts, on a domestic and international stage, and we have the Irish language at our core.

“Galway is a UNESCO designated City of Film, has a proud record of producing world class theatre, film and music and holds renowned arts and cultural festivals every year. It is currently bidding to be the European Capital of Culture in 2020 and not only that; but local businesses have agreed to pay higher commercial rates in order to support the bid. What better record and commitment to the arts can one city have?

“Culture and the arts in an intrinsic part of Galway’s social scene and is one of the main tourist attractions in our city. Holding this forum in Galway would be a fantastic coup for the city and it would put us firmly back on the international stage.”
