Delays over maternity hospital are unacceptable

04 May 2016

Labour Party Senator Kevin Humphreys has called on the Minister for Health to intervene immediately in the dispute over the location of a new National Maternity Hospital.

Senator Humphreys commented: “Further delays to a new National Maternity Hospital being built are completely unacceptable. I am calling on the Minister for Health to intervene immediately.

“The dispute between the National Maternity Hospital and St Vincent’s Hospital stems from a row between the two parties over who should have governance control over the proposed new hospital on the campus of St Vincent’s Hospital.

“I appreciate the importance of effective governance structures being put in place. However, it is totally unacceptable that women should have to wait any longer for a new maternity hospital to be built.

“The current maternity hospital on Holles Street is outdated and not fit for purpose. The Minister for Health must intervene immediately in this dispute to ensure an amicable agreement is arrived at and a new National Maternity Hospital is built on the campus of St Vincent’s Hospital.”
