Labour Youth is calling for the Minister for Jobs, Mary Mitchell O’Connor, to support the Labour Party’s workers’ rights motion which is to be voted on in the Dáil this evening.

National Chairperson Grace Williams said: “Earlier today we handed in a letter to the Department of Jobs for the attention of Minister Mary Mitchell O’Connor, calling on her to support the Labour Party’s private members motion on strengthening workers’ rights.

“There were so many achievements in securing workers’ rights made by the previous government of which we, in the Labour Party, are extremely proud. However, there is still more to do to ensure our workers are offered the fair working conditions and decent pay that they deserve.

“The lack of a commitment to strengthen workers’ rights in the current Programme for Government is of great concern to those of us in the labour movement. Voting for this motion would show that the Minister and her government colleagues are committed to ensuring a better standard for workers.

“I am asking that the Minister puts the discussion of “new politics” in the Dáil into practice by voting for this motion.”
