Government need to follow through on Labour’s motion on living wage
Labour Party Spokesperson on Public Expenditure Sean Sherlock has called on the Government to follow through on the Dáil motion passed by the House calling on the Government to implement a Living Wage.
“The Labour Party has argued for a Living Wage,” stressed Deputy Sherlock, speaking on the Debate on the Summer Economic Statement published this week.
“This House passed a motion on the 1st of June which supported the call for an incremental increase in the minimum wage until it is pegged at 60% of median earnings and a Living wage to be adopted throughout the Public Sector.
“This is a call by the House which contradicts the Summer Economic Statement. We will have to evaluate New Politics unless this call by the House is examined in detail by the Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform Committee.”
“The Summer Economic Statement does not mention a Living Wage, rather it references the increase in the minimum wage to €10.50, which we do not have sight of yet. This is something that must be tested out in Committee hearings.”
