The announcement by Minister Shane Ross today of a judge-led independent inquiry into the Olympic ticket scandal is a welcome recognition of the gravity of the matter, according to Sean Sherlock, speaking on behalf of the Labour Party.

“Over recent days, we have all been shocked at the unfolding fiasco in Rio. Thankfully, having met with the Attorney General this afternoon, Minister Ross seems to have belatedly realised it is time for him to get out of the limelight and allow the full truth of this matter to be exposed.

“The Labour Party was clear that the investigation into this matter must be independent. We welcome the announcement this afternoon that a retired judge will lead this important work, and following the completion of this work we will support the establishment of a statutory Commission of Investigation if that seems justified. It is also welcome that OCI, THG Sports and Pro 10 have indicated that they will cooperate fully – this will be essential in getting to the bottom of this grubby saga.

“The announcement this afternoon made clear that terms of reference will be published next week. I expect that the Labour Party, along with all political groupings, will be consulted on the drafting of these terms of reference.

“The events of recent days have taken away from the performance of our athletes, and that is unforgivable. During the Olympic festival, nothing should ever be allowed to detract from the performance of those representing Ireland, and now is the time to ensure this is never the case again”.
