Equal Work Deserves Equal Pay

Labour Youth is today reiterating the need to end pay discrimination in support of the ASTI’s call to tackle the issue of pay discrimination for newly qualified teachers.

National Chairperson of Labour Youth, Grace Williams commented, “For too long we have seen entry level public sector workers, like newly qualified teachers, be subject to unequal pay. As members of the Labour Party and the trade union movement, our core beliefs lie in the value of decent and equal pay for decent and equal work. This type of discrimination undermines the fight for true equality in our society.

“Pay discrimination has hit headlines recently in the form of public sector pay but it also exists in our minimum wage legislation, where young people are offered lower rates of minimum wage for equal work. This is also unacceptable.

“We must see action by the government now to tackle pay disparities.”
