ROSS U-TURN ON RAILWAYS CLOSURE WELCOME

16 November 2016

Labour TD for Tipperary Alan Kelly has welcomed the U-turn from Minister Shane Ross today when he clarified that no railway line will close.

“I welcome the confirmation from Minister Shane Ross in the Seanad today that no railway will close but it caused unnecessary fears across rural Ireland.”

“Now that the Minister has caved on proposals to close railway lines he must secure the investment needed to make our railway lines the success that they can be.”

‘It is a shame that we had to wait for over a day for this clarification on his plans, in the wake of Government leaks from an NTA report that several lines would have to close.”

“Our railway network is crucial for attracting investment into our rural towns.”

If we want people to use our trains, we need certainty on their future, timetables that are convenient for working people, and investment to improve speeds and reliability.”
