Sherlock responds to the report of the Mobile Phone and Broadband Taskforce
Labour spokesperson on Communications, Seán Sherlock TD, has hit out at the Government’s plans to create another group to implement the recommendations of the Mobile Broadband taskforce.
Deputy Sherlock said:
“Since the Government took office, this plan has been delayed and pushed from pillar to post. And now again we see the creation of yet another group to implement the views of the taskforce.
“Why was the taskforce shrouded in secrecy on meetings? Where are the definitive timeliness? Rural Ireland is not a buzzword for the Government to roll out and wring their hands over.
“Rural Ireland is the business being created to improve economic activity. It is the farmlands that are feeding Europe and the spine holding this country up.
“Rural and urban Ireland cannot meet the 350,000 job target set by the Government unless it is properly supported through adequate infrastructure – that includes broadband and mobile.
“The Minister has decided to split the plan between two departments, thus creating an avoidable duplication of efforts, and kick the can down the road once more.”
