Statement by Senator Ged Nash on the passing of Ken Whitaker

10 January 2017

Ken Whitaker will be missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

I had the singular honour of being invited to speak at his 98th birthday celebrations just two short years ago.

His contribution to the modernisation of Ireland is well documented and generations of Irish citizens owe Ken a great debt of gratitude.

He always spoke fondly and with great pride of his upbringing in Drogheda and his education at St Joseph’s CBS. He was truly remarkable man, erudite and tremendous company.

I will remember him with great fondness and as an exemplar of what represents the best in the Irish public service.

He was a true patriot and a gentleman.

Ends.
