ADEQUATE RESOURCING FOR DUBLIN GARDAI NEEDED

18 January 2017

Labour spokesperson for Dublin Senator Kevin Humphreys says the Government must ensure Gardai are adequately resourced to deal with crime on our streets. It follows the violent death of a man in Lucan in the early hours of this morning, and a shooting in Ballymun on Monday.

“I want to condemn the violent killing of a man in Lucan in the early hours of this morning, and the shooting on Monday night in Ballymun.

“We need to ensure the Gardaí have the resources they need to keep our streets safe, prevent attacks and monitor suspects, as well as investigate and prosecute crimes.

“It’s essential that we ensure the cycle of violence does not explode again in Dublin with tit-for-tat killings and escalating gangland feuds.

“If this level of violence continues it is only a matter of time before another innocent bystander is killed.

“I am calling on the Minister for Justice Frances Fitzgerald to ensure sufficient resource are available to An Garda Síochána.

“Its also important to recognise that while some action is being taken to address the cycle of violence that has plagued the north inner city of Dublin, there are many other forgotten parts of Dublin where violent crime is a weekly occurrence that we must address.”
