O’SULLIVAN URGES WOMEN TO ATTEND FREE CERVICAL CANCER TEST

24 January 2017

Labour TD and Chair of the Oireachtas Group on Reproductive Rights, Jan O’Sullivan, has urged women aged between 25 and 60 to avail of their free smear test for cervical cancer.

“As this week is European Cervical Cancer Awareness Week, now is the perfect time to avail of free cervical cancer screening.

“I was delighted to be asked by the Irish Family Planning Association to support its campaign by promoting their Pearl of Wisdom badge. Each year in Ireland over 300 women are diagnosed with cervical cancer and 90 of these sadly die from the disease. Considering that cervical cancer is a preventable disease, this figure is shocking. This screening programme for all women is the only way to guarantee that we achieve early detection and save women’s lives.

“You can get more information on cervical cancer from your GP, from the IFPA and by calling CervicalCheck Freephone 1800 45 45 55.”
