Defibrillators should be installed in all schools

28 September 2017

Labour Party TD for Dublin Fingal, Brendan Ryan has supported calls by Gaelscoil Ros Éo principal Tim Ó Tuachaigh to install defibrillators in all schools as a life-saving measure.

This call comes as Mr Ó Tuachaigh saved a life of a nine year old child when he helped to revive the pupil who collapsed in the playground in cardiac arrest thanks to the defibrillator that was on school property.

Deputy Ryan said:

“There should be a programme put in place to provide defibrillators to all our schools. It’s a vital modern day piece of life savings equipment.

“We have them in Leinster House so why not our schools.

“Having defibrillators in schools should be the equivalent of lifebuoys beside lakes.

“Installing defibrillators in schools could be rolled out over a number of years, with appropriate training for teachers and school staff.

“It’s essential to the modern day first aid kit.”
