Nash backs calls for Employer Red-Alert Guidelines
Echoing the call of the widow of one of the three people tragically killed in Storm Ophelia, Labour Senator Ged Nash has backed the proposals for clear guidelines for employers in status red situations.
Senator Nash said:
“The country-wide red alert for Storm Ophelia was a first for Ireland, it is now clear that guidelines should be in place for all sectors as to how employers should respond in the event this should happen again.
“I back the calls of Pamela Goss today for no ambiguity on this, and extend my deepest sympathies to her and her family, and the family and friends of those who died in Storm Ophelia.
“The Taoiseach committed to addressing this issue in the day after the Storm in response to questions from Labour leader Brendan Howlin, and I welcome the news that the Minister for Housing is working on this in the context of a review of the aftermath.
“At the time we saw many companies make the call early Sunday night or Monday morning that their staff shouldn’t come to work for safety reasons during the storm however for many there was confusion and uncertainty due to the lack of clear guidelines.
“Hopefully now this can be addressed to ensure that in future situations employers will have clear guidelines to work from.”
