Need for a directly-elected mayor for Dublin has never been greater – Humphreys
Labour Party General Election candidate for Dublin Bay South, Senator Kevin Humphreys, has said the Government needs to urgently move on directly-elected mayor for Dublin proposals.
Senator Humphreys said:
“The Government needs to move forward on the issue of a directly-elected for Dublin urgently as there has been too much foot dragging on this issue to date.
“With Dublin competing with other major European cities for tourism and investment, the need for a directly-elected mayor for our capital city has never been greater.
“A directly-elected mayor for Dublin could focus on the main problems Dubliners are facing at the moment such as a lack of affordable housing and a lack of proper transport infrastructure which is leading to traffic mayhem at peak times right across the city and county.
“Last year, I commissioned an opinion poll by Ireland Thinks, which showed that 75% of Dubliners would welcome a directly-elected mayor.
“There has been many false dawns on this issue, but there is now an opportunity to drive forward with the election of a mayor for the Dublin region, that will build strong communities right across the region.”
