Taoiseach making a mockery of democratic institutions-Kelly

26 November 2017

Labour Party TD for Tipperary, Alan Kelly has said it is vital that documents that were given to the leader of Fianna Fáil yesterday are given to other Opposition parties today.

Deputy Kelly said:

“The fact that only the leader of Fianna Fáil has been given access to documents by the Taoiseach makes a mockery of our democratic institutions. I’ve been asking parliamentary questions on behalf of the Labour Party on this matter and have been refused answers since October 27th.

“The fact that this information has been provided to Deputy Martin to try stop an election, despite the fact that I have asked over twenty parliamentary questions on this issue, is an affront to democracy.

“Political accountability on this issue does not stop because of the Charleton Tribunal of Inquiry. My questions on this matter need to be answered by the time the Dáil convenes on Tuesday.

“It is vital that this correspondence is provided to all Opposition parties today, so we can continue our political scrutiny of this issue.

“If the Government had been upfront about answering my questions in the first place, we would not be in the situation we are in now.

“The Taoiseach should do the right thing today and release the documentation to avoid further controversy.”
