Statement by Joe Costello on the verdict in Kehoe Vs RTE defamation case

I note with interest the outcome of the case of Kehoe Vs RTE.

I would like to express my disappointment that a specific level of responsibility has been apportioned to me. 

I am at loss to understand why I have been referred to in the judgement.  

I was not a party to the case; I was not called as a witness in the case; I didn’t name the plaintiff on the broadcast concerned;  I was given no hearing in the case and no action was taken against me.

In fact, I wasn’t aware that the case was taking place until I read the media reports.

I am advised that the finding of the jury in relation to me has no legal significance or consequences.
