Penrose welcomes doubling of fuel allowance

Labour spokesperson on Rural and Community Affairs, Willie Penrose TD, has welcomed confirmation from the Social Protection Minister that the fuel allowance will be doubled this week due to the weather.

Deputy Penrose said:

“This is welcome news from Minister Doherty that the fuel allowance will be doubled this week as the freezing weather conditions take hold across the country, which is something my Labour colleagues and I have been calling for this week.

“The move will particularly benefit those in rural and isolated locations who may find themselves cut off by poor conditions.

“The allocation of an extra €22.50 will offer peace of mind to those older people who are particularly vulnerable in the freezing conditions that they can warm their homes for the duration of the cold snap, without facing the prospect of a major fuel bill down the line.

“People should continue to check in with their family or neighbours in rural or isolated areas where possible this week.”
