Rosslare Port neglected by Government in Budget

09 October 2018

Labour Party Leader Brendan Howlin has said that the Government have completely ignored Rosslare Port in Budget 2019.

Deputy Howlin said:

“Giving his Budget 2019 speech, Paschal Donohoe managed to name every major port in the country when it comes to Brexit preparations bar Rosslare Port. This is shocking and a sign that this Government doesn’t care about the pivotal role Rosslare could play in a post-Brexit Ireland.

“Prior to today’s Budget, I called for Rosslare to be upgraded to a Tier One Port.

“Rosslare Europort is particularly well-placed for development, as it is the nearest port to continental Europe and therefore strategically important.

“The logic of that is simply that Dublin Port is hugely focused on shipping to Britain. If we want to shift even a fraction of this trade to continental Europe, then we should develop the port that is nearest to our export markets.

“It makes no economic sense for goods to be transported from across Munster to Dublin, only to be shipped south within sight of Rosslare on their way to the continent. It would also lower Carbon emissions for Rosslare to take more of this traffic.

“The money was there in Budget 2019 for Rosslare Europort to be upgraded to a Tier One port, and yet the two Fine Gael ministers for Wexford failed to make the case and failed to make Wexford a key player in a post- Brexit Ireland.”
