Minister must act to avoid industrial chaos in education

29 November 2018

Labour Spokesperson on Education Senator Aodhán Ó Ríordáin has called on the Minister for Education to act now to avoid industrial chaos follwing the ASTI rejection of the propsed pay deal.

Comenting Senator O’Ríordáin said:

“I am calling on the Minister to proactively re-engage with the unions to find a new deal for teachers.

“Two of the three major teaching unions have now rejected this deal. It is obvious that what is on offer is not satisfactorty to the majority of teachers in Ireland.

“Clearly issue of pay equality remains a vital point of principle for Irish teacers.

“The Labour Party wants all work in our schools, from secretaries to SNAs and teachers to be treated with respect in relation to their terms, condidtions and pay.

“The Minister for Education needs to show leadership and dispatch with formalities, by engaging with unions immediately, in order to prevent industrial chaos.”
