Irish science students are charting the way forward
Labour Party Education spokesperson Aodhán Ó Ríordáin, has said the calibre of projects on show at the BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition demonstrate how far ahead young people are when it comes to tackling the big issues of our times such as climate change.
Commenting after his visit to the BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition, Senator Ó Ríordáin said:
“I was extremely impressed by the high standard of projects on display at the RDS. The high quality projects show the great aptitude Irish students have for STEM subjects and their ability to look at the world in a different way.
“Much commentary has been made in the last eighteen months over the decline in numbers of people taking up the teaching of STEM subjects, but events like this pay huge testament to the work science teachers do.
“It is hard not to be encouraged by the scientific aptitude, talent and imagination demonstrated by students from right across the country.
“What struck me the most from walking through the RDS was how many projects were dedicated to tackling climate change, proving once again that our young people are miles ahead of those dictating environmental and climate action policy in this country.
“Year on year, I am so encouraged to see more young girls participate in this event. This year over 55% of the participants are girls. These figures show the importance of tackling the shortage of women in STEM related fields.
“I am confident that we will be hearing much more from many of the students who presented at this week’s exhibition far into the future.”
