Labour Party Justice and Children and Youth Affairs spokesperson, Seán Sherlock TD has urged the Government to reconsider its decision not to appoint a Digital Safety Commissioner. Following the publication of yesterday’s Progress Report from the Advisory Council for Online Saftey, Deputy Sherlock has repeated his call for the creation of a Digitial Safety Commissioner.

Deputy Sherlock said:

“We are listening to plans and task forces about reports on this issue for far too long. We have legislation from the Opposition to create a Digital Safety Commissioner, even Government TDs on the committee tasked with this area have agreed a Commissioner is required yet the Government continues to dodge the issue in favour of boardroom meetings with the tech giants.”

“Soft touch regulation has shown to not yield results here. Why should we trust companies who do not have a track record of trust in this area? Ireland must be a leader in holding these companies to account.”
